11th EPRI Balance-of-Plant NDE Symposium

The 11th EPRI Balance-of-Plant NDE Symposium will take place 9–11 August 2010 at the Skamania Lodge in the scenic Columbia River Gorge in Stevenson, Washington. Balance-of-plant heat exchangers and piping perform vital functions in terms of nuclear plant safety, license renewal, and maintenance of plant capacity factors. Periodic and one-time nondestructive testing is an essential part of balance-of-plant heat exchanger and piping condition assessment. Such assessment is important for maintaining reliable operation of balance-of-plant heat exchanger and piping components and minimizing plant capacity losses.

EPRI invites abstracts to be submitted on the following suggested topics:

  • electromagnetic, visual and ultrasonic techniques for ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic balance-of-plant heat exchanger and piping components
  • maintenance, repair and replacement of balance-of-plant heat exchanger and piping components
  • balance-of-plant heat exchanger and piping condition assessment programs
  • modeling and new emerging NDT technologies
  • owner operating experiences
  • performance demonstration of technologies, procedures and operators.

One-page abstracts on the above topics are requested prior to 1 March 2010. Selections of approved papers for presentation will be announced by 24 May 2010. Final papers to be included in the proceeding are due by 23 July 2010.

Submit abstracts to: Kenji Krzywosz, EPRI, 1300 West W.T. Harris Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28262-7097; (704) 595-2596; fax (704) 595-2860; e-mail kkrzywosz@epri.com.

Materials Science & Technology 2010 Conference & Exhibition
17-21 October 2010

MS&T annual conferences are hosted by four leading materials societies: ACerS, AIST, ASM and TMS. This partnership brings together scientists, engineers, students and suppliers to discuss current research & applications, and to shape the future of materials science and technology. Since corrosion has become a very relevant topic to materials, NACE International will co-sponsor MS&T’10.

  • Biomaterial Technology
  • Ceramic and Glass Materials
  • Corrosion Control and Sustainability
  • Electronic and Magnetic Materials
  • Environmental and Energy Issues
  • Fundamentals and Characterization
  • Iron and Steel

ASTM International Symposium on Creep-Fatigue Interactions

Papers are invited for the International Symposium on Creep-Fatigue Interactions: Test Methods and Models, to be held 17–19 November at the Grand Hyatt in San Antonio, Texas. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the International Congress on Fracture (ICF) — Inter-quadrennial Conference, the symposium will be held in conjunction with the 15–18 November standards development meetings of Committee E08.

This symposium will address the latest research in the area of creep-fatigue crack formation and crack growth in high temperature materials and structures. Presentations on all aspects of research in the area of creep-fatigue interactions are sought to enable the exchange of information and ideas on the topics below.

Papers on recent developments in test equipment, experimental techniques, and models for representing the data and applications of the data are being sought. Topics of interest include: crack formation and crack growth under creep-fatigue; early/short crack growth under creep-fatigue; creep-fatigue behavior of welds; effect of creep on subsequent fatigue strength; effect of fatigue on subsequent creep behavior; constitutive models for creep-fatigue deformation, application of creep-fatigue models to structures; test methods; high resolution displacement measurements at elevated temperatures; crack length monitoring; data acquisition; treatment of scatter in data; correlating parameters and their validity; models for representing data and applications of data; precision and bias in creep-fatigue testing; and uncertainty analysis and propagation of errors.

Interested presenters must submit a 300–500 word abstract online at www.astm.org/E08symp1110.htm by 15 April 2010. Symposium co-chairs Ashok Saxena and Bilal Dogan will notify authors via postal mail by 15 June of their paper’s acceptability for presentation. Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Journal of ASTM International (JAI). JAI is an online, peer-reviewed journal for the international scientific and engineering community

For additional technical information, contact symposium co-chairs Ashok Saxena, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR; (479) 575-3054; asaxena@uark.edu; or Bilal Dogan, EPRI, Charlotte, NC; (704) 595-2650; bdogan@epri.com.
