Outstanding Paper, Materials Evaluation

[reprinted from the Awards and Honors column, Materials Evaluation, May 2007]

2006 Winner Margarit (Mark) G. Lozev

A member of ASNT since 1991, Margarit (Mark) G. Lozev is the chief engineer/NDE technology leader at the Edison Welding Institute (EWI) in Columbus, Ohio. As such, he mentors and leads NDT strategic planning business development, critical project execution and teaming with partners of the Institute. In his time at EWI, Lozev has also served in the roles of lead, principal and senior engineer, expanding the Institute's activities in the NDT field and implementing emerging ultrasonic phased array technology and modeling systems.

Lozev received his B.S. and M.S. in metallurgical engineering from the Sofia (Bulgaria) University of Technology and his Ph.D. in NDE from the University of Sofia. Prior to his employment by the Edison Welding Institue, Lozev worked at: Amoco in Houston, Texas, as a senior engineer; the Virginia Transportation Research Council as a senior scientist; the Technical University of Sofia, Plovdiv Branch, as associate professor and head of research and development; and the Chimmash Institute and the Chimmash Company as director/senior scientist and testing laboratories head. Lozev was a senior visiting scientist at the University of Cambridge, England, for one year and at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado, for two years. He is the author of over 100 published articles and reports, as well as coauthor of two books and a book chapter. From 1996 to 1997, he was chair of ASNT's Acoustic Emission Committee. He holds ASNT NDT Level III and ACCP Professional Level III certification in ultrasonic testing, and is also certified Level III in uUltrasonic testing by TÜV. Lozev has also received an Outstanding Paper Award from ASNT for an article published in Research in Nondestructive Evaluation in 1993.

2006 Winner Roger L. Spencer

Roger L. Spencer is an applications engineer for the Edison Welding Institute (EWI), located in Columbus, Ohio. An EWI employee since 1993, Spencer conducts projects related to nondestructive testing technique development and optimization. He had previously served in the capacity of lab coordinator for EWI's metallography, mechanical testing and machine shop. Before joining EWI, he worked for Conam Inspection as a Level II, and for Rockwell International and McDonnell Douglas as a Level III in NDT process control. An ASNT member since 1989, Spencer is affiliated with the Miami Valley Section (Dayton/Cincinnati, Ohio) of the Society.

Spencer graduated as an NDT technician from the Spartan School of Aerospace in 1974. He later earned his B.S. (cum laude) in electronic engineering technology from Franklin University. He is an ASNT NDT Level III in ET, RT and UT. Spencer has published several articles in conference proceedings, Materials Evaluation and the ASME Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology.

Congratulations to Mark G. Lozev and Roger L. Spencer, winners of the 2006 Outstanding Paper Award for their paper, "Developing, Optimizing and Validating Automated Ultrasonic Procedures for Testing Heavy Walled Hydroprocessing Reactors," published in the September 2005 issue of Materials Evaluation.
