2007 Winner Kirit V. Smart
Kirit
Smart is the president of Smart Associates, Inc., of Melbourne, Florida,
which he established in 1992. A member of ASNT since 1977, Smart has
a long history of involvement with the NDT industry. The holder of bachelor's
degrees in both mechanical and electrical engineering (1965 and 1967,
respectively), Smart began working with NDT and maintenance of boilers,
textile machines, and power generation and transmission equipment in
his native India. Relocating to the United States, Smart began working
for BASF Wyandotte Corporation's Plastic Raw Materials and Chemical
Plant in South Kearney, New Jersey, in 1972 as an engineer responsible
for NDT of boilers, piping and power generation equipment. Beginning
in 1974, he was employed by the Commercial Union Insurance Company in
their Boiler and Machinery Division, where he performed third-party
audits and further NDT activities. From 1977 to 2001, Smart was principal
engineer at Florida Light and Power, where he was the corporate Level
III, radiation safety officer, lead auditor and area quality control
supervisor. As president of Smart Associates, he provides outside agency
services as a Level III and NDT auditor, develops and qualifies NDT
procedures and radiation safety programs, and provides NDT personnel
training and qualification services. In 2006, he was named a Businessman
of the Year by the National Republican Congressional Committee's Business
Advisory Council.
Smart served as a member of ASNT's National Certification
Board from 1991 to 1997, and was a member of the Society's Board of
Directors from 1991 to 1994. An ASNT Fellow (1991), he has been involved
in the Section Operations Council as chair, vice chair and secretary,
as well as through service as the Membership Division chair. He has
devoted much time and energy to the development of postconference seminars,
and has been a section officer and chair for both the Miami and Palm
Beach Sections of ASNT. Smart has also served as a member of the IRRSP
Committee. In addition to his ASNT activities, he has been a member
of ASME, AWS and NDTMA.
