Robert C. McMaster Gold Medal

[reprinted from the Awards and Honors column, Materials Evaluation, December 2007]

2007 Winner Matthew J. Golis

Matt Golis is the founder of Advanced Quality Concepts (AQC), an NDT consulting firm. Golis served with the US Army as a radio operator in Baumholder, Germany from 1954 to 1956, after which he attended the Ohio State University, majoring in electrical engineering. Receiving his bachelor's degree in 1961, he went on to do graduate work under the direction of Robert C. McMaster in the University's Welding Engineering Department. He received his M.Sc. in 1968 and his Ph.D. in 1973.

Before the establishment of AQC in 1986, Golis worked as a researcher and group manager for Battelle Memorial Institute in the areas of NDT and general quality improvement. Projects were conducted for various governmental agencies as well as for EPRI in the area of nuclear power generation integrity. He also served as quality assurance manager for the Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation and consulted with the ASME program of onsite quality assurance surveys for nuclear related manufacturing and construction sites. In his current position, Golis has conducted work for organizations such as the Air Force Research Laboratory, NIST, NRC and many private entities using NDT in the aerospace, electric power and construction industries. He has earned the respect of his peers for his ability to develop innovative approaches to NDT problems and for his skills in communicating technical information to a broad audience.

An ASNT member since September 1963, Golis has been an energetic participant in Society activities. He has conducted a number of Level III refresher courses and short courses at ASNT conferences. An active member of the Aerospace and Ultrasonics Committees, Golis has assisted in the preparation and review of various ASNT publications and has been the author of several, including the original Model Written Practice, An Introduction to NDT and ASNT Level III Study Guides in ultrasonics and basic methods. In addition, Golis supplied elements of the latest editions of the NDT Handbook volumes on PT and UT and reviewed the contents for technical accuracy. Golis is the author of over 50 articles in conference proceedings and various journals including Materials Evaluation, the International Journal for Nondestructive Testing and the IEEE Transactions on Sonics and Ultrasonics. He holds ASNT NDT Level III certification in ET, MT, PT and UT.

In recognition of his service to the Society, ASNT named Golis a Fellow in 1978, and honored him with the Outstanding Paper Award in 2002 and the ASNT Tutorial Citation in 2003. Having been a student of Robert C. McMaster, it is all the more fitting that Golis now adds the Gold Medal to his laurels.
