Mehl
Honor Lecture
[reprinted
from the Awards and Honors column, Materials Evaluation, January
2008]
2007 Winner Roderic K. Stanley
For
the past 30 years, Rod Stanley has been actively involved in the research
and development of nondestructive testing technologies for oil country
tubular goods. Some of the tools developed in that time have changed
the course of tubular testing, while others, such as a robot that crawls
through pipe, hold great promise for the future. Stanley is a consultant
for itRobotics, International Oilfield Services and Tubecare International.
His work varies from research in robotic NDT of tubular products to
training and certifying oilfield tubular inspectors. He is the chair
of the API Resource Group for Coiled Tubulars, and is a member of the
British Institute for NDT and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. With
Don Bray, he is the author of Nondestructive Evaluation: A Tool
in Design, Manufacturing, and Service.
A member of ASNT since 1978, Stanley has served as chair
of the Electromagnetics Committee and the Handbook Development Committee,
both of which he continues to be involved with. Stanley is also a member
of the Chemical and Petroleum Committee and the Materials Evaluation
committee. He has been an associate technical editor for the journal
for many years and has contributed 18 articles. Other articles have
been published by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and ASME.
Stanley was heavily involved with the NDT Handbooks
on electromagnetic testing, magnetic particle testing and special methods.
For his contributions to the Society, he was named an ASNT Fellow in
1992.
