Mentoring Award

2007 Winner Richard A. Bottari

Richard A. Bottari has been the NDT manager at Stork MMA Testing Labs in Newton, Pennsylvania since 2001. A veteran of the US Air Force and a graduate of the NDT program at Spring Garden College, he holds ACCP Professional Level III and ASNT NDT Level III certifications in MT, PT, RT, UT and VT. Bottari has been a member of ASNT since 1979 and has been the secretary of the Greater Philadelphia Section since 2005, having previously served as its chair.

2007 Winner Charles N. Jackson, Jr.

Charles N. Jackson, Jr., now retired, was employed at Westinghouse Hanford for almost 30 years (1960-1989) as a senior engineer and then as a principal engineer. From 1955 to 1960, he was a senior engineer at General Electric in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jackson received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New Jersey, and his master's degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Cincinnati. From 1980 to 1985, he was an adjunct professor at Columbia Brown college, where he taught NDT courses. A US Navy veteran, he holds Level III certifications in ET, LT, MT, NR, PT, RT and UT, and has been a member of ASNT since 1970.

Jackson served on the Select Review Committee on Pressure Vessels for ASNT's Nondestructive Testing Handbook, second edition: Volume 1, Leak Testing, and is the author of ASNT Level III Study Guide: Leak Testing Method. He was chair of ASNT's Leak Testing and Personnel Training Committees from 1979 to 1989, and chair of the Columbia River Section from 1986 to 1990. In 1986, he was named a Fellow of ASNT. An active educator, Jackson was a trainer in seven NDT methods for GOGEMA from 1989 to 2005. His greatest technical achievement was building a neutron radiography facility using a TRIGA reactor in 1975, for inspecting fast flux test reactor nuclear fuel to help eliminate fuel failures.

2007 Winner Scott D. Miller

Scott D. Miller is the technology coordinator at Saudi Aram-co in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where he has worked since 1996. Before taking a position at Saudi Aramco, he was a Level III for Aptech Engineering in Houston, Texas for 10 years. From 1973 to 1986, Miller was a diver and welder for Taylor Diving and Salvage in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, and in the early 1970s, he taught secondary school at St. Andrew's Academy in Nassau, Bahamas. Miller is presently the chair of the board of ASNT's Saudi Arabian Section, and prior to that was the Section chair from 2005 to 2007. He received his bachelor's degree in math and physics from Occidental College in 1969, and holds ASNT NDT Level III certifications in AE, ET, IR, MT, PT, RT, UT and VT.

2007 Winner Larry G. Olsen

Larry G. Olsen is the director of quality assurance of Valley Metals in Poway, California. Prior to this position, he was the quality assurance manager of special processes for all facilities of Senior Aerospace from 1984 to 2006, and quality control supervisor and Level III at Valley Metal Works from 1979 to 1984. A graduate of Creighton University's radiologic technology program, Olsen's certifications include: NAS 410 Level IIIs in LT, PT, RT and VT; ACCP Professional Level III and ASNT NDT Level III in PT; and aerospace prime Level III approvals from Boeing, Honeywell, Rolls Royce and Pratt and Whitney Aircraft.

Olsen has been a member of ASNT's Section Operations Council since 1997 and was on the ASNT Board of Directors from 2002 to 2005. In 2005, he was named an ASNT Fellow. He is an active member of the San Diego Section and served as Section chair from 1998 to 2000. Olsen is a lifetime member of ASNT, and is also a member of ASM, ASQ, ASTM and AWS.
