Essential ASNT Publications Released

Publications mentioned in this article can all be found on the ShopASNT New Additions page.

An essential element in the effectiveness of nondestructive testing (NDT) is the qualification of the personnel who are responsible for and perform nondestructive testing. Formal training is an important and necessary element in acquiring the skills necessary to effectively perform nondestructive tests. As a result, ASNT has prepared and published documents that can be used as part of a training program to qualify and certify NDT personnel. Three core publications are now available from ASNT to assist employers with their qualification programs.

SNT-TC-1A 2006 Edition
Packaged with ANSI/ASNT CP-105
order # 2070

The first is Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A: Personnel Qualification and Certification in Nondestructive Testing (2006), which provides guidelines for employers to establish their in-house certification programs. Since 1966, employers have used this industry-valued document as the general framework for their NDT certification programs.

SNT-TC-1A establishes the general framework for a qualification and certification program. In addition, the document provides recommended educational, experience and training requirements for the different test methods.

The 2006 edition of SNT-TC-1A is annotated so that users of the 2001 edition can quickly and easily locate new and updated material. The vertical lines in the margins of this document indicate that information in the text has been modified in some way.

Highlights of the 2006 edition include the following.

  • Limited certifications for Level II digital radiography, film interpretation, ultrasonic A-scan and digital thickness measurement are defined.
  • Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is now a separate test method.
  • The electromagnetic testing (ET) method has been subdivided into four techniques, with specific training and experience requirements for each.
  • Level I and II recertification cycles have been increased from three to five years.
  • The “Recommended Training Course Outlines” appearing in the 2001 edition of SNT-TC-1A have been replaced by CP-105.

ANSI/ASNT CP-189
Packaged with ANSI/ASNT CP-105
order # 2507

ANSI/ASNT CP-189: ASNT Standard for Qualification and Certification of Nondestructive Testing Personnel (2006) is also now available as a package with ANSI/ASNT CP-105 (2006). ANSI/ASNT CP-189 is an ANSI approved revision providing updated training and certification requirements for Level I, II and III personnel. This revision was developed by the ASNT Standards Development Committee. Notable changes and additions to ANSI/ASNT CP-189 (2006) are:

  • A Level II Limited category is added to the levels of qualification.
  • The electromagnetic testing (ET) method has been subdivided into four techniques, with specific training and experience requirements for each.
  • Recertification requirements have been changed.
  • The Level I and II “Training Course Outlines” formerly in Appendix B have been replaced by ANSI/ASNT CP-105 (2006).
  • ANSI/ASNT CP-105 is sold with CP-189 or can be purchased by itself.

ANSI/ASNT CP-105
CP-105 Only
order # 2820

Sold with SNT-TC-1A (2006), with ASNI/ASNT CP-189 or by itself, is the newly approved standard, ANSI/ASNT CP-105: ASNT Standard Topical Outlines for Qualification of Nondestructive Testing Personnel (2006), which replaces “Recommended Training Course Outlines” from SNT-TC-1A (2001). CP-105 was approved for submittal to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) by the ASNT Standards Development Committee. This standard specifies the body of knowledge to be used as part of a training program for qualifying and certifying NDT personnel.

Outlines have been added or expanded for the following test techniques.

  • Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is now a separate test method.
  • Alternating current field measurement (ACFM), flux leakage testing, remote field testing and eddy current testing outlines have been expanded.
  • A holography/shearography (laser methods) Level III outline has been added.
  • Other test methods and techniques have been reviewed and updated.

The package including the 2006 editions of both SNT-TC-1A and CP-105 is available for $44 for ASNT members and $72 for non-members. Order catalogue number 2070 for this package.

The package including the 2006 editions of both CP-189 and CP-105 is available for $44 for ASNT members and $72 for non-members. Order catalogue number 2507 for this package.

In addition to the package deals described above, ANSI/ASNT CP-105 is available for purchase by itself for $29.25 for ASNT members and $48 for non-members. Order catalogue number 2820 for just the 2006 edition of CP-105.
