Central Savannah River Area (Augusta, Georgia and Southern South Carolina)

Ten members attended the 22 April meeting of the Central Savannah River Area Section at the Red Lobster in Aiken, South Carolina. The topic for the evening was advances in magnetic particle testing. Ken Boden, regional sales manager of Magnaflux Corporation, presented information to the Section on white contrast paint. This paint provides a white background to enhance visible magnetic particle indications. Boden also informed the group on composition, applications and post-test cleaning. He also shared information concerning portable yokes and direct current battery packs. A door prize was awarded at the conclusion of the meeting.

Fifteen members attended the 13 May meeting, held at the Red Lobster in Aiken, South Carolina. Hussein Sadek, regional director for Region 5, spoke to the Section concerning eddy current applications and limitations. His presentation was very informative, as he shared his experiences in field applications of this technique. He also was very gracious in recognizing all that the Central Savannah River Area Section has acheived this term. He swore in the new officers for the 2008 to 2009 year and presented outgoing Section Chair Greg Robinson with an ASNT chair pin in appreciation of his service. Also in attendance was Walter Matulewicz, chair of the ASNT Certification Management Council, as was Chair of the Board Marvin Trimm, of Savannah River National Laboratory. A door prize was awarded at the conclusion of the meeting.

Cleveland (Ohio)

Twenty-five members and guests were in attendance for the 21 April meeting of the Cleveland Section, held at the St. Paul Hellenic Center in North Royalton, Ohio. Israel Vásquez, owner of Vastek Consulting, was the guest speaker. The topic for the evening was "NDT Process Controls - Why Bother?". The presentation focused on the reality that not everyone has a full understanding of NDT process controls and how to use this information for the continual improvement process. Vásquez has been a Level III consultant for the past 18 years mainly for the aerospace industry. He is contracted by the Performance Review Institute as a Senior Lead Nadcap auditor. Vásquez holds Level III certification in three methods and is a member of ASQ and ASTM. At the Section's request, a two day auditor course was offered by him and was held on 22-23 April at the Independence Holiday Inn. All in attendance enjoyed his presentation and welcome his return.

On 23 April, the Mohawk-Hudson Section invited Reza Zoughi, professor of electrical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, to discuss his research in microwave and millimeter wave nondestructive testing techniques. Zoughi described the fundamentals of the technology and added interest through practical examples of applications in the aerospace, civil and other industries. The GE Global Research Center hosted the event, which was attended by 10 members and guests. Zoughi joined the Section in a pizza party at Mario's restaurant in Niskayuna, New York following the presentation.
