Central Savannah River Area (Augusta, Georgia and Southern
South Carolina)
ASNT Regional Director Hussein Sadek spoke at the 15 May meeting of
the Central Savannah River Area Section concerning eddy current applications
and limitations. His presentation was very informative, and he shared
his experience in these techniques in field applications. He was also
very gracious in recognizing all the achievements accomplished by the
Section this term. He then proceeded to swear in the new officers for
the 2008-2009 year. Also in attendance was ASNT Certification Management
Council Chair Walter Matulewicz and Chair of the Board Marvin Trimm.
Trimm presented outgoing Section Chair Greg Robinson with an ASNT chair's
pin in appreciation of his service to the Section. A door prize was
awarded to one lucky member at the conclusion of the meeting.

Valery Godinez was the guest speaker at the June meeting of the Golden
Gate Section, and 18 members were treated to an informative and entertaining
presentation on "Advances in Acoustic Emission," followed
by a lively question and answer session.
This year, the Section established the E.W. Huddleston award for members
who have made significant and continuous contributions of time and effort
to the Section. The initial award was, of course, presented to Bill
Huddleston, for whom the award is named. Also receiving the award was
Vern Davison, in recognition of his many years of devoted service to
the Section.

The Greater Houston Section hosted their last meeting of the season
at the Houston Museum of Natural Science's Wiess Energy Hall on 12 June.
It was billed as "F3 Night" for family, friends and fellowship.
Twenty-five members and guests gathered to enjoy an excellent exhibit
that captures the past, present and future of the nation's energy industry.
A buffet was served for everyone who attended. There was a good mix
of attendees, including students and scholarship winners, Executive
Committee members, and Past Chairs Bill Arnoult (1979), Jerry Fulin
(2003), David McGrath (2004) and Greg Hudkins (2005). Spouses who attended
were welcomed. Monse Lozano, an ASNT member recently transferred to
Houston from Puerto Rico, attended with his wife Haidee and their two
children. It was a wonderful networking and socializing event and a
great way to end the year.
The Greater Houston Section's Board Meeting on 9 July at Brady's Landing
restaurant included 12 officers, committee chairs and members. The treasurer's
reports for May and June were reviewed and the final year-end audit
was scheduled.
In addition to wrapping up the financial records of the Section for
the past year, this meeting focused on the new year to come - specifically
confirming individual roles and drafting the technical program and calendar
of events. New roles include Lloyd Graham (Constitution and Bylaws Comittee),
Deal Moore (Nominating Comittee), Dwayne Witter (President's Points
Comittee), Keith Wilson (Scholarships Comittee) and Tommy Ouzts for
the new Volunteer Committee.
The technical program drafted includes a presentation on mentoring
by Chuck Hellier, a railroad safety presentation, a joint meeting with
AWS or NACE, a holiday casino party, a Captains of Industry panel presentation
by area asset owners, the annual golf outing, a vendors night (possibly
combined with ASME's Trade Show), a presentation by ASNT President-Elect
Jocelyn Langlois and the 11th ICPIIT Conference. 2008 to 2009 is shaping
up to be an exciting season for the Greater Houston Section.

The 3 May meeting of the Greater Philadelphia Section was the Awards
Banquet/Spring Social, held at the Fisher's Tudor House in Bensalem,
Pennsylvania. It had a murder mystery theme: "Dinner, Dessert and
Death ... Who Killed the King of Rock and Roll?" The show was thoroughly
enjoyed by the 16 members and guests in attendance.
Old Dominion (Richmond, Virginia)
The Old Dominion Section ended the 2008 fiscal year with a social event
held on Thursday, 12 June. Seventeen members and guests met at the home
of Bill and Charlotte Via for cocktails, a buffet dinner and desserts.
Following the dinner, the group traveled to historic Hanover Courthouse
and attended a performance of "Greater Tuna" at the Barksdale
Theatre. Many of the ASNT members in attendance were introduced to this
play at a national ASNT meeting in Dallas several years ago.
This gathering concluded the Section's events for the year. A summer
board meeting with old and new officers was planned to discuss the events
of the new year.

The Saudi Arabian Section held its twelfth and final general membership
dinner meeting of 2007-2008 on 30 June at the Dhahran Palace Hotel in
Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
The meeting was attended by 100 members and guests, and Section Chair
Fathi E. Al Qadeeb presented an overview of Section activities during
the season. All members who attended this meeting were given an individual
annual award after the presentation.
After the award distribution, the members of the Section retired to
have an excellent buffet dinner served by the hotel staff.
St. Louis (Missouri) [ Photograph

The St. Louis Section's Spouses' Night, planned for 21 May, was postponed
due to the unavailability of the planned speakers. An open board meeting
was held at Quality Testing. The board members reviewed the judging
of the Greater St. Louis Science Fair that had taken place earlier in
the month and finalized details for the ASNT conference, "Nondestructive
Evaluation of Aerospace Materials and Structures," that was held
in June.
On Thursday, 26 June, 15 members and guests of the St. Louis Section
gathered to welcome featured speaker Charles Mazel from BlueLine NDT.
Mazel's presentation, "Fluorescence in a Whole New Light,"
focused on how and why he developed the blue light technology. Mazel
is an avid scuba diver and initially developed the blue light to induce
baby coral to fluoresce and to aid in his love of night diving and photography.
He initially used ultraviolet light, but found that visible blue light
did not dissipate nearly as quickly as the ultraviolet light in salt
water. This steered him down the path of developing better visible blue
light sources to aid in his hobby. Mazel is now investigating the potential
that his lights have in the nondestructive testing market. He has shown
that visible blue light is comparable to traditional ultraviolet light
for fluorescing penetrant and magnetic particles. He is currently gathering
information and working with industry leaders to determine what is required
for his system to meet specifications (which would need to be rewritten
to allow this type of light source). His presentation was very entertaining,
with dazzling photos of all sorts of fluorescing objects, both underwater
and above water. Mazel made himself available after the presentation
for demonstration of his equipment. This meeting was well attended and
a high level of interest was shown in the demonstration portion following
the formal presentation. Some attendees even brought samples for demonstration
purposes.
