Dear Sirs:
It is about time the ASNT makes an attempt to focus on the true backbone
of the organization and for that matter the backbone of the industry.
I am talking about the Technician. We are the guys out there in the
pipe racks, AST's, Petrochemical plants, Pulp mills, Ships, Aircraft,
and a number of other industries ensuring the quality.
For 19 years, I have been waiting for the ASNT to pay attention to
the Technician (or as you call us "Practitioner"). Which,
by the way where in the world did you get that term for us, lets focus
on more important issues than trying to make us sound different. Or
is it (as I have wondered) the ASNT is so far removed from us they
need to in some way make us sound more professional. By the way, thanks
for the tip on how to remove a nail I'll keep that in mind the next
time I'm shooting a weld.
If you really want to focus this to the Technician and possibly have
more Technician enrollment into your organization and develop a respected
professional Technician industry continue to focus on topics that
will help the Technician. For example;
a.) Review changes in the codes we typically
must obtain acceptable results too.
b.) How to improve production without reducing
quality. (how to shoot more welds and maintain film quality)
c.) Number belts for pipe welds. What is the
best way to make them and how many should you have.
d.) How your RT Rig should be organized.
e.) How to increase the Security of your sources
since 9/11.
f.) Need a jig? Tips on how to fabricate a
workable, functional jig.
g.) Best methods to maintain your equipment.
h.) Film interpretation.
i.) RT of those unusual components (forensic
engineering support).
That is my two cents, I sincerely hope the ASNT mainlines this support
for the Technician. Your support would be very appreciated by us grunts
in the field.

Subject: suggestions for features - Joe Knapp
Dear Mr. Knapp,
You have given so much good information here. Thank you for the list
of topics. They have been added to the log of suggested topics that
will go to the Technicians Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting on March
19, 2002 at the ASNT Spring Conference in Portland, OR. Copies of your
e-mail are going along too. The committee will enjoy seeing your comments.
The term practitioner came from our Technical Services Department.
That department relates very closely with people that actually apply
NDT in the field. We were looking for a term that signified those individuals,
encompassed all levels of application and wasn’t redundant to
the title of the publication itself — The NDT Technician (TNT).
Thanks for your “two cents”. We intend to do our best.
Stay in touch and keep giving us your ideas.
