Standards Development Committee

The Standards Development Committee (SDC) is a standing Board Committee that provides the means, methods and actions necessary for the development and maintenance of ASNT standards and other documents for the qualification and certification of nondestructive testing (NDT) personnel. The SDC supports the Society’s strategic objectives concerning the establishment of standards for NDT personnel qualifications and certification; develops American National Standards (ANS) and develops adoptions of International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards in accordance with the requirements of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Per ANSI rules, the SDC is the ASNT consensus body for ANS development. ASNT is an ANSI-accredited standards developer (ASD).

The SDC is made up of not more than 20 and not less than seven members. The SDC Chair and Vice-Chair are appointed by the ASNT Board of Directors, subject to the approval of a majority of the SDC, and the SDC Secretary is an ASNT staff member from the Technical Services department. The Secretary is a non-voting member of the committee and may not be used to make up a quorum or majority of the committee. Membership on the Standards Development Committee is open to all individuals having a direct and material interest in the NDT profession, representing varied interest categories in NDT, but there cannot be domination by a single interest category. ASNT membership is not a requirement for membership on the SDC.

The SDC maintains the following American National Standards:

ANSI/ASNT CP-189, ASNT Standard for Qualification and Certification of Nondestructive Testing Personnel. This employer-based standard establishes the minimum requirements for the qualification and certification of nondestructive testing (NDT) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM) personnel.

ANSI/ASNT CP-105, ASNT Standard Topical Outlines for Qualification of Nondestructive Testing Personnel. This ANS establishes the minimum topical outline requirements for the qualification of NDT personnel and details the minimum training course content for those personnel.

ANSI/ASNT CP-106, Nondestructive Testing - Qualification and Certification of Personnel. This ANS is the U.S. adoption of ISO 9712:2005 as modified in accordance with ISO Guide 21 and provides certification requirements for personnel certifying in the ET, MT, PT, RT, UT and VT test methods.

ANSI/ASNT ILI-PQ-2005, In-line Inspection Personnel Qualification and Certification Standard. This ANS establishes the minimum requirements for the qualification and certification of in-line inspection (ILI) personnel, and was developed to address the U.S. Department of Transportation Operator Qualification requirements found in 49 CFR 192 and 49 CFR 195.
