Acadiana

Lafayette, Louisiana

On 15 July, the Acadiana Section held its first official technical meeting. The event was held at the Evangeline Downs Cajun Buffet Restaurant, with 38 members and guests in attendance. Section Chair Damian Shaheen and Section Treasurer Stephone Elam welcomed and presented the Section with the official charter.

The guest speaker for the technical meeting was Don Mears. Mears has over 30 years in the oil and gas industry. He is an American Petroleum Institute (API) member and subcommittee member on the API Inspection Summit. Mears is the president of Analytical Training Consultants and works as an oil and gas industry consultant for GE Oil & Gas Inspection Technologies. He authored API Recommended Practice 578: Positive Material Identification (PMI) second edition PMI certification course and is a certified training provider.

Mears presented a very informative presentation on the need to understand API 578 guidelines, how Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) instruction CPL 03-00-004: Petroleum Refinery Process Safety Management National Emphasis Program applies to the industry, and OSHA CPL 02-02-045: Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals – Compliance Guidelines and Enforcement Procedures, 29 CFR 1910.119 with proper material verification program and training. He demonstrated how PMI applications and X-ray fluorescence (XRF)/optical emission spectrometry technologies work and how they are used in industry. Mears also explained how to recognize safe practices utilizing XRF technology, radiation safety, and understanding how “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” (ALARA) can be attained.

The Section wishes to thank Mears for his support and presenting a well-prepared presentation for its first meeting.

Greater Houston

Houston, Texas

The Greater Houston Section hosted approximately 50 of its members, friends and family at the Houston Zoo on 14 June. The Section also donated 50 zoo passes to DePelchin Children’s Center. Despite the heat, there was ample shade around the zoo walkways. Members and friends had a good time, enjoying a whole day of access to the recently innovated zoo and a lunch buffet in a dedicated area.

Mohawk Hudson

Albany, New York

The 10 June Mohawk-Hudson Section meeting was held at the Van Dyck Restaurant and Lounge in Schenectady, New York. The speaker was Larry Mullins, the regional director for ASNT Regions 1 and 2. He talked about the 2014 Section Leaders Conference and how pipelines are built and examined.

Saudi Arabian

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Arabian Section held its first dinner meeting for the 2014–2015 program year on 14 July at the Carlton al Moaibed Hotel in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. The Section-sponsored meeting was attended by 15 members and guests. Attendance was low because of Ramadan.

Section Treasurer Mohammad A. Al Salih began the meeting with a warm welcome. He made announcements, including about the Saudi Arabian Level III exam in October.

After the announcements, Al Salih invited Section Chair Fathi E. Al Qadeeb to start his presentation update on the 7th Middle East NDT Conference & Exhibition. At the end of the presentation, the normal questions and answers were conducted and an appreciation plaque was presented to the speaker.

After the presentation, everyone enjoyed a buffet dinner specially prepared for Ramadan breakfast served by the Carlton al Moaibed Hotel.

Southern Africa

Johannesburg, South Africa

Members of the Southern Africa Section attended an informative presentation on IRIS inspection on 23 July at the School of Applied Non Destructive Examination in Boksburg, South Africa. This was a joint meeting with the South African Institute for Non-Destructive Testing, with many in attendance.

Frits Van Biljon, from Steel Test, gave a lot of information that was greatly appreciated by those present, especially as this inspection technique is not widely known in South Africa.

The evening went well and everyone enjoyed the usual pizza.

Section Highlight

The first technical meeting of the Acadiana Section was well attended and included a presentation by Don Mears on various oil and gas industry guidelines.
