Central Ohio

Columbus, Ohio

The Central Ohio Section participated in a Columbus Technical Societies dinner meeting on 22 May, hosted by the Society of Women Engineers. The meeting included a presentation by Kari Mackenbach, director of sustainability at MS Consultants, Inc. The presentation showcased the many green infrastructure technologies that are being employed in the local community through Blueprint Columbus. Blueprint Columbus uses today’s technology to address the problem of rainwater in sanitary sewers by directing it to the storm sewer, where it belongs. It is a faster, cheaper, greener, and more innovative way of eliminating sanitary sewer overflows while investing in neighborhoods and the local economy.

Chicago

Chicago, Illinois

The Chicago Section met on 12 June with 10 members in attendance at Crazy Pour in Villa Park, Illinois. The meeting was an organizational session to set up the schedule for the 2017–2018 season. Ideas to boost attendance were discussed and a number of thoughts were documented. Recent student outreach efforts met with mixed results. While career days at a couple of high schools were well attended, the “Teachers’ Night” did not yield any responses. Derek R. Coleman of Scot Forge will be heading up this program for the upcoming season. Obtaining advertisers and sponsors for the local section website and meetings will be under the direction of Michael L. Kelley of Olympus America, Inc. Salahuddin Razi from Moraine Valley Community College will be leading the adult education. Chuck Johnson will be serving as chair again, as well as handling the yearbook. Michael E. Chopik will continue to manage the website. Due to Stuart A. Kleven of Alloyweld’s efforts, the 2017–2018 program schedule is already 75% filled with very relevant talks, both basic and with excellent research content.
