Francisco Miranda

Keynote Speaker

Aerospace Trends and the Challenges to NDT

Francisco Miranda | Pratt & Whitney Canada

11:00 AM | Monday, 26 Jun 2017

Today’s aircraft power plants offer better performance characteristics, are more cost efficient to operate and maintain, and minimize the impact to the environment. Miranda will review the current trends in aerospace contributing to the performance and reliability characteristics of today’s modern power plants. Miranda will also review advanced manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing, friction stir welding, and powder metallurgy. Inspection of the components made by these methods now becomes a serious challenge. Advancements in digital radiography and in computed tomography have facilitated the development of inspection techniques capable of inspecting components produced with advanced processes. The progress of future automation in NDT relies on implementing artificial intelligence (AI) into systems. The objective is to greatly reduce human intervention and labor time, improve the reliability of defect detection, and automate the NDT inspection process by innovative inspection methodologies with AI enabled technology.

About the Speaker

A graduate of Dawson College in Mechanical Technology – Manufacturing Methods, Frank Miranda has been involved in NDT in the aerospace industry since 1981. His current position is NDT Specialist for Pratt & Whitney Canada and his experience spans all areas of non-destructive testing applications covering inspection, quality, auditing and training. He is currently CGSB Level 3 certified in PT and RT, and MT Level 3 certification in accordance with Pratt & Whitney Canada’s certification program, and is a member of of ASNT, ASTM’s E07 committee on NDT, and CINDE’s Quebec Chapter.

Computed Tomography: A Short Course

Dan Schneberk | Engineer at JIL Systems

|

This four hour course is offered as part of the technical program.

  • Introduction to Computed Tomography (CT)
  • Section 1: CT Inspection Data
  • Section 2: The principles and mechanics of CT scanning
  • Section 3: X-Ray Attenuation Physics
  • Section 4: CT Artifacts
  • Section 5 – Special Applications

About the Speaker

Daniel J. Schneberk received undergraduate degrees from the University of Oregon and a master’s in statistics from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1988, Dan joined the nondestructive evaluation group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. His work in NDE has continued to the present. Inspections performed at LLNL included CT of NASA shuttle components, Air Force turbine blades, Caterpillar ductile iron and steel components; R&D for airport baggage scanning; and CT scanning of art objects, nuclear fuel particles, etc. X-Ray Imaging Fundamentals, Industrial Techniques and Applications, co-authored with Harry E. Martz and Clint Logan, summarizes much of this work. He has received two LLNL Directors Performance Awards and awards from Ford and NASA.
