About IRRSP Certification

The Industrial Radiography Radiation Safety Personnel (IRRSP) program came into being in the 1990s and the radioactive materials (RAM) portion of the program was approved by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 1998. ASNT is shown as the Certifying Entity for the NRC. In 2001, the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD) approved the IRRSP program and recognized ASNT as an Independent Certifying Organization.

The IRRSP program provides third-party radiation safety certification that meets the certification requirements of both Title 10 Part 34 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10CFR34), and the Suggested State Regulations for Control of Radiation (SSRCR, Part E, Radiation Safety Requirements for Industrial Radiographic Operations).

Three IRRSP certification examinations are available:

  • Radioactive materials (RAM), for personnel using gamma sources only;
  • X-Ray, for personnel using x-ray machines only; and
  • Combination (“Combo”) for personnel working with both RAM and x-ray devices.

Initial Certification

Applicants for IRRSP certification must submit a fully completed IRRSP application form, fees and a 1.5 x 1.5-inch (4 x 4 cm) color passport photograph of the applicant. Applicants must also provide documentation to satisfy the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete 40 hours of formal classroom instruction in radiation safety topics as defined in 10CFR34; the SSRCR, Part E; or another jurisdictional authority and provide documentation of that training. Documentation may be a certificate or statement signed by the course provider that clearly lists the hours of attendance and training agency’s license or registration number; and
  • For Radioactive Materials (RAM) certification, document 320 hours of active participation in performing industrial radiography using a gamma (radioactive materials) source; for x-ray certification, document 160 hours of active participation in performing industrial radiography using an x-ray machine; or for Combination (RAM and X-Ray) certification, document 480 hours of experience consisting of 320 hours in RAM and 160 hours in x-ray.
Submit a practical examination for the applicable method(s) (RAM, X-Ray or both), administered by an ASNT-recognized institution, documented and mailed to ASNT within six months of the written exam. Institutions recognized by ASNT are government or private institutions licensed by the USNRC or Agreement States for gamma radiation and by appropriate jurisdictional authorities for x-ray devices. The practical examination form is appended to the IRRSP application.

Experience must be acquired under the control of a license granted by the USNRC, by an Agreement State for gamma radiation, or by a jurisdictional authority for x-radiation. Documentation may consist of photocopies of past radiation employment records; other suitable, traceable documentation is also acceptable.


IRRSP recertification is by re-examination only.

The application for renewal of ASNT IRRSP Certification is the same application as is used for initial certification and the same ASNT examinations must be taken. A new Practical examination is also required, using the same form as the initial examination. However, in lieu of the initial training requirements, the following requirements apply: 40 hours of training as outlined in section 2.0 within 12 months prior to recertification, or at least eight hours of annual classroom refresher training by an institution recognized or accredited by ASNT. Such training must cover basic radiation safety principles, as well as the equipment operating and emergency procedures for radiation-producing equipment for which renewal is sought.

To satisfy the required number of training hours, participation in training by the trainee or the trainer will be considered.
