Volunteers Needed to Revise "Materials & Processes for NDT Technology"

4/16/2014

The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) seeks qualified volunteers to assist in updating the content of the Materials & Processes for NDT Technology to bring the publication into alignment with current technology used in modern industry.

The goal as a volunteer for this project would be to revise material in one or more chapters of his or her choosing, as well as add missing content if necessary. The inclusion of new photographs and diagrams would also be appreciated.

Released in 1981, Materials and Processes for NDT Technology was written for the NDT practitioner as a general overview of the fundamentals of the relationships between materials and processing technology and the role NDT plays in the manufacturing process. As such, it has been well received as both a self-study reference and classroom training resource.

Volunteers should have familiarity with one or more of the following areas:

Materials:

  • Bonding, structure, and solidification of materials
  • Physical and mechanical properties of materials
  • Destructive testing of materials
  • Ferrous metals and alloys
  • Aluminum and aluminum alloys
  • Nickel and nickel alloys
  • Magnesium and magnesium alloys
  • Titanium and titanium alloys
  • Polymers, ceramics, and composites

Processes:

  • Selection of manufacturing processes
  • Casting
  • Metal forming, including forging, rolling, extruding, drawing, swaging
  • Sheet metal forming
  • Powder technology
  • Brazing and soldering
  • Various forms of welding
  • Material removal processes
  • Machining
  • Grinding and finishing
  • Surface treatments and coatings

Volunteers will be at liberty to repurpose as much of the original book as deemed usable. In addition to being recognized in the finished publication by name and affiliation, volunteers are eligible for 3 certification renewal points.

Oversight of the project will be under the umbrella of the Educational Publications Committee of the Technical and Education Council.

Those interested in volunteering, should please submit area(s) of interest and CV to Bob Conklin, Educational Materials Editor at 1-800-222-2768 ext. 235 or bconklin@asnt.org

ASNT's mission is to create a safer world through the promotion of the NDT profession and the application of its technologies.
