Awards and Honors
Receiving awards granted by the Society confers acknowledgement of not only work well done, but recognition that a NDT professional is an expert in his field. These high-level awards are granted by peers and ranking committees who wish to tell the industry and the world of a person’s merit and a special, deserved place within the industry.
The types of awards given by ASNT fall into one of two categories: ASNT Awards of Recognition (non-financial) and ASNT Financial Awards.
ASNT Awards of Recognition (Non-Financial)
Philip D. Johnson Honorary Member Award
The Philip D. Johnson Honorary Member Award is the highest lifetime ASNT award bestowed upon a longtime member of the Society who is appreciated at the national level – and perhaps internationally – for many years (minimum 20) of meritorious service in the technology of nondestructive testing.
A Fellow of ASNT is an individual member of the Society who has 15 years NDT professional experience; 10 years ASNT membership and has supported the Society through contributions and participation at the local and/or national level. A Fellow must have demonstrated outstanding professional distinction, and must have made continued significant contributions to the advancement of NDT in areas such as management, engineering, science, education, administration or planning.
Young NDT Professional Award
The Young NDT Professional Award recognizes individuals whose initial career contributions exemplify high standards of excellence in the areas of professional achievement and meritorious service. The award is given to supervisors, educators, managers, researchers, consultants, developers and others who are ASNT members with five to ten years of involvement in the NDT/NDE industry.
Charles N. Sherlock Meritorious Service Award
The Charles N. Sherlock Meritorious Service Award provides recognition for an individual's outstanding voluntary service to the Society, through single or aggregate activities, though not necessarily in any single year.
Robert C. McMaster Gold Medal Award
The Robert C. McMaster Gold Medal Award provides recognition to an individual or event (multiple persons) for outstanding contribution, exceptional meritorious service, or significant advancement in any area of nondestructive testing and/or the Society. Selections may be made on the basis of a single outstanding contribution or service, or for continual contributions or services over an extended period of time.
Outstanding Paper Awards (ME & RNDE)
The ASNT Outstanding Paper in Materials Evaluation Award is presented to a person or persons for a manuscript published in Materials Evaluation, which, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, is an outstanding contribution to the advancement of nondestructive testing. The ASNT Outstanding Paper in Research in Nondestructive Evaluation Award is presented to a person or persons for a manuscript published in Research in Nondestructive Evaluation, which, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, is an outstanding contribution to the advancement of fundamental knowledge in nondestructive evaluation.
George L. Pherigo Tutorial Citation
The George L. Pherigo Tutorial Citation award recognizes and honors an individual who has made significant contributions and efforts in the area of NDT education and training.
Research Council Awards for Innovation & Sustained Excellence
The Research Council Award for Innovation recognizes highly distinguished individual breakthroughs in research in the field of NDE/NDT within the past five years.
The Research Council Award for Sustained Excellence recognizes outstanding sustained contributions in NDE/NDT research.
Lester/Mehl Honor Lectures
Individuals selected to present the Honor Lectures shall have made outstanding contributions to the science of nondestructive testing. Such contributions may be in the area of research, applications technology, management, education, equipment development, or other related areas. The individual must be prominent amongst his or her peers. The Lester Honor Lecture is presented during even-numbered years; the Mehl Honor Lecture is presented during odd-numbered years.
Lou DiValerio Technician of the Year

The purpose of the Faculty grant is to provide an annual incentive to faculty members in ABET-accredited engineering programs to revise their existing course(s) or to develop new courses to teach nondestructive testing and evaluation by providing financial resources for this purpose. Requests for grants up to $8,000 will be considered.
Engineering Undergraduate Award
The Engineering Undergraduate Award is a cash award, currently $3,000 per award, created to provide an incentive to engineering undergraduate students enrolled in engineering programs accredited by ABET or its equivalent to choose NDT as their field of specialization.
Robert B. Oliver Scholarship
The Robert B. Oliver ASNT Scholarship is a cash award, currently $2,500 per scholarship, granted to the student who submits the most outstanding paper about NDT research, investigation or development.
