Using Automated Ultrasonic Testing for Pipeline Girth Weld Inspection

By using wireless modules for ultrasonic data transmission and remote crawler control, along with software designed to support calibration, an automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) system can address several common challenges in pipeline inspection. These include the need for heavy power-supply equipment, complex modeling and simulation procedures, prolonged calibration times across multiple channels, and complicated system assembly. When implemented effectively, such systems can support more efficient inspection of long-distance pipelines.

Introduction of System Features

The automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) system described in this tutorial employs phased array and time of flight diffraction (TOFD) techniques. Designed for pipeline girth weld inspection in harsh environments, including both onshore and offshore applications, it can be used alongside automated welding processes. The system’s advantages include high inspection efficiency, effective discontinuity detection, reliable inspection results, no radiation hazards, and the ability to perform inspection alongside other operations.

Key features of the AUT system include:

  • Wireless connection and transmission. The crawler, workstation, and remote controller can be connected and transmit data wirelessly, eliminating cable constraints and enabling faster, more efficient, and stable scanning. Wireless data transmission can cover distances of up to 10 m.

  • Lithium battery power supply. The rechargeable batteries powering this system support continuous operation for over four hours, allowing the system to operate without relying on external generators.

  • Scanning speed. The system offers 10 adjustable speed settings, with a maximum scanning speed of up to 3 m per minute.

  • Software support for calibration. Integrated calibration assistance and verification functions allow delay and sensitivity calibration based on verification results.

  • Safety design and environmental protection. The crawler is equipped with an emergency stop switch, power-off braking, and speed-loss locking functions. With an IP65 protection rating, the system is designed to handle demanding field conditions.
