A Pivotal Moment

Why the Industry Must Invest in the ASNT Foundation

Across the nondestructive testing (NDT) industry, one challenge overshadows nearly every business objective: finding and developing qualified talent. Companies invest heavily in equipment, technology, and growth strategies, yet none of those investments matter without the skilled professionals needed to perform the work. The workforce pipeline that sustains the industry is under increasing pressure, and strengthening it requires a collective commitment from the organizations that depend on it most.

Every unfilled position delays projects. Every technician who leaves the field represents lost expertise. Every student who never discovers NDT is a potential future employee, researcher, educator, or business leader lost to another industry.

The industry already knows a workforce shortage is here. What gets less attention is what it actually costs when a promising technician can't afford the training to move up, or a student never hears about NDT as a career at all. The ASNT Foundation exists to close that gap, and it is asking the industry it serves to help write the next chapter.

The Foundation's mission is straightforward: to inspire and empower the next generation of NDT professionals through scholarships, grants, fellowships, research, and career development programs. What is less understood, even among people who have supported the Foundation for years, is how much room there still is to shape what that support looks like. The scholarship and grant programs on the books today are real and valuable, but they are also just a starting point. The Foundation is at a point where NDT companies can help build what comes next.

The Foundation's Role in Building the Future of NDT

The ASNT Foundation is more than a scholarship provider. It is one of the profession's most important tools for workforce development. Through scholarships, grants, fellowships, research support, and career development initiatives, the Foundation helps attract new talent, reduce barriers to entry, support professional advancement, and strengthen the long-term health of the NDT workforce.

As workforce shortages continue to challenge employers across the industry, the Foundation serves as a bridge between today's workforce needs and tomorrow's talent pipeline. Every scholarship awarded, every grant funded, and every student introduced to NDT creates opportunities for individuals while helping ensure the profession remains strong, innovative, and sustainable.

This broader mission creates opportunities for industry partners to do more than support an existing program. It allows them to help shape the future of workforce development in NDT.

What Already Exists

The Foundation currently administers several named scholarships, each aimed at a different stage of the NDT career path. The Charles Hellier III Scholarship supports students working toward an associate degree or post-secondary certificate in NDT. The Engineering Undergraduate Scholarship encourages engineering students to specialize in NDT and nondestructive evaluation (NDE). The James J. Treat Scholarship helps working professionals pursue continuing education and advanced training. The Robert B. Oliver Scholarship supports students in NDT credential programs. Alongside these, the Foundation offers a Faculty Grant and a Student Travel Grant, and it recognizes research and innovation through the ASNT Foundation Fellowship.

The Opportunity Companies Haven't Fully Claimed Yet

Here is what many NDT companies don't realize: the current lineup of scholarships and grants is not the ceiling on what's possible; it's a foundation to build on, in the most literal sense. There is real room to work directly with the ASNT Foundation to create scholarships and support programs that align with a company's workforce needs.

That could mean a scholarship aimed squarely at people entering the profession for the first time, including the technicians a company will need in five years but hasn't hired yet. It could mean support for current employees pursuing an industry certification that advances their career and their value on the job. It could mean helping a technician cover the cost of specialized training, or attending the ASNT Annual Conference, where much of the field's knowledge sharing and networking happens, but travel costs keep many working technicians away. It could mean a company establishing a named scholarship that carries its own brand and directly supports the workforce pipeline it depends on most.

None of this requires waiting for a new program to appear on the Foundation's website. It requires a conversation.

Why This Matters to a Company's Bottom Line, Not Just Its Conscience

Supporting the Foundation is not simply charitable; it is a direct investment in the talent pipeline every NDT company competes for. A donor company gains visibility with students and early-career technicians at the exact moment they're choosing a career path or an employer. It builds goodwill with its own workforce by funding the certifications and training that help employees advance. And it satisfies corporate social responsibility commitments with something concrete and industry-specific to point to, rather than something generic.

The Foundation is structured to make this accessible at any level of giving. A large company can fund a fully named scholarship program. A mid-sized company can sponsor travel grants for its own technicians to attend the Annual Conference. A small company can make an annual gift, and many employers will match employee contributions dollar for dollar, extending the impact further still.

The Ask

The NDT industry cannot indefinitely outsource the job of developing its own workforce. Every certified technician, every research fellow, every engineer who chose NDT because a scholarship made it possible represents an outcome someone had to fund. Right now, the ASNT Foundation is offering the industry a genuine seat at the table to decide what that funding will look like going forward.

No single company can solve the workforce challenge alone. But together, the NDT industry can build a sustainable talent pipeline that benefits every employer, every practitioner, and every customer who depends on safe and reliable inspection. Companies that care about where their next generation of talent comes from, and about strengthening the profession that keeps critical infrastructure safe, have an unusually open door to walk through. The scholarships and grants on the Foundation's website today are not the limit of what's possible. They're an invitation to build what's next, together.
