Essential Dos and Don'ts for Reliable Results

Fluorescent penetrant testing is one of the most widely used nondestructive testing (NDT) methods because it is inexpensive, portable, and highly sensitive to surface-breaking discontinuities. Its apparent simplicity, however, hides a process that is easy to perform poorly. Small deviations in cleaning, dwell time, removal technique, or viewing conditions can suppress real indications or generate false ones. This tutorial reviews the six basic steps of fluorescent penetrant testing, the penetrant and developer types available, the equipment and lighting requirements of ASTM E1417/E1417M as most recently revised in 2021, and the personnel qualification framework of SNT-TC-1A, with an emphasis on the practical dos and don'ts that most affect test reliability.

1. Introduction

What could be simpler than dipping a part in a colored liquid, washing off the excess, and looking for what remains in a crack? Liquid penetrant testing (PT) has been described this way since its earliest days, and the six steps at its core have not changed. Yet, as anyone who has performed the test knows, the apparent simplicity is deceptive. The best penetrant materials in the world are worthless without disciplined adherence to procedure, and inattention to processing details is the most common reason a penetrant test fails to find what it should, or finds things that are not there [1].

Fluorescent penetrant testing, sometimes called fluorescent penetrant inspection, is a specific application of PT in which the dye fluoresces under ultraviolet-A (UV-A) radiation. It is favored over visible dye penetrant testing where higher sensitivity is required, because a bright indication against a darkened background offers far greater contrast, in some estimates 100:1 or greater, than a colored indication against a white developer background, whose contrast tops out around 10:1 to 20:1 [1].
