About
Tsuchin “Philip” Chu is a Professor of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering and Distinguished Scholar at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He is a recognized leader in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) with more than 40 years of experience advancing NDE technologies and their practical applications. A pioneer in digital image correlation (DIC), he also has expertise in infrared thermography, ultrasonics, radiography, and AI-enabled inspection, supporting the aerospace, defense, and transportation industries. He serves as a Subject Matter Expert for NASA’s Engineering and Safety Center NDE Technical Discipline Team and has contributed to the inspection of critical aerospace components and infrastructure systems.
Dr. Chu is an ASNT Fellow and has served two terms on the ASNT Board of Directors as well as Vice President of the St. Louis Section. His honors include the ASNT Lester/Mehl Honor Lecture Award, Research Recognition for Sustained Excellence, the Mentoring Award, and multiple Faculty Grant Awards. He remains deeply committed to advancing ASNT’s mission, workforce development, and global NDT leadership.
Now, as Executive Director of NDT Application Engineering at Evident, she supports business and product development across industries. Emilie is also deeply involved in NDT organizations, serving as a director on the ASNT Board of Directors since 2022 and as chair of the ASME BPVC Section V FMC working group. She also hosts the Inspect Tech podcast, covering industry challenges.
Personal Statement
ASNT has been central to my professional life for decades, shaping not only my career but also my commitment to advancing nondestructive evaluation worldwide. Through service on the Board of Directors, councils, committees, and local sections, I have worked closely with colleagues and volunteers to support members, mentor students, and advance workforce development and NDT education. These experiences have given me a deep appreciation for the challenges and opportunities facing our community.
With 40 years of experience in NDT, I have witnessed the rapid transformation of the NDT field and the growing role of digital technologies. Looking ahead, I am eager to help ASNT lead in innovation, global collaboration, and talent development. I seek to serve with integrity, vision, and a collaborative spirit to ensure the Society continues to grow, stay relevant, and provide meaningful support and opportunities for all members.
