Just as it sounds, nondestructive testing involves inspecting and evaluating materials, components, or assemblies—without harming them, and often without even taking them out of service. Regular NDT inspections are at the core of proactive maintenance programs supporting our most vital industries
To perform nondestructive testing with precision and accuracy, NDT specialists need to be able to inspect materials and components from the outside, inside—and even through solid, semi-solid, or liquid elements
A variety of media, technologies, and equipment make this type of inspection not only possible, but also highly accurate. For example:
Electromagnetic radiation and sound-based testing return information about a material’s composition and integrity.
Penetrating radiation—think X-rays and gamma rays—reveals the interior of objects.
Ultrasonic waves can help both pinpoint the location and evaluate the severity of a crack or discontinuity.
Cameras, magnifiers, and dyed or fluorescent fluids help inspectors visually locate otherwise invisible flaws.
